The Leukemia Society’s Light The Night Walk:

The Facts:
Every 5 minutes in the U.S. someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer.
Every 9 minutes someone dies from it.

Would you walk 2 miles to save a life?
If you answered yes, I’d like to invite you, and your company to participate in the Light the Night Walk. It is the Leukemia& Lymphoma society’s annual evening walk to celebrate, and commemerate the lives touched by cancer.
Each Fall teams of friends, families, and co-workers gather in cities and towns across America. They walk in twilight, holding illuminated balloons. White for survivors, and red for supporters. More than a walk, the evening includes music, food, and family activities.

FOR ONE BEAUTIFUL ILLUMINATING NIGHT , HOPE DOESN’T JUST FLICKER, IT FLOATS!

This years’ Light The night will be held in Tacoma on Ruston Way.
Sunday Sept. 21st. Registration is at 6pm, and the walks starts at 7pm.
This is the 1st year Puyallup has a team, and it is our wish that Frankie’s team will be one of the largest, and strongest there that night!

It is only a short 2mile stroll, no fitness level required. Baby strollers welcome.
I hope you can help us honor our son by sponsoring the team , donating a product or service for our auction, or joining us for the walk.

This is an opportunity for your company to do something good in the community, this is an opportunity for you to fight cancer!

As far as National Donor’s Day (2/13) this is what we have in the works:
We have a blood drive scheduled at the downtown Puyallup Fire station on Feb. 15th.
We are treating it as a 1 year anniversary drive of sorts. It was this time last year when the Firemen organized Frankie’s blood, and bone marrow drive so we are keeping up the tradition. Don Hodges has the names of 2 local families who are in similar situations and our hope is to help them out. We are going to try and have a table set up where people can commit to being an organ donor, or at least get some info about it.
Right now we are just getting everything planned. Hopefully, in a few weeks you will start seeing flyers.
I’ll keep you posted.

Wonderful News:
We got our Tiger back, someone seen the small reward offered in the paper, and called us late last night.
Now the puppies are like 2 peas in a pod again. Tearing up the house, chewing on everything, and just basically being mischievous. We couldn’t be happier.

To Everyone in the Puyallup/ Tacoma area:
One of our 2 puppies has been missing since last night. His name is Tiger, and his is a tan chihuaua (Taco Bell dog) Long hair, kind of fluffy. He is only about 3 pounds, and if you go over to him he automatically rolls over, and gives you his belly to pet. He not too nervous or shakey like most small dogs.
If you found him, or see him PLEASE email us. Our other puppy is just lost without him, and I don’t have to tell you how we feel! I am going to place an add in the local paper. We will offer a small cash reward, and promise “No questions asked” !

July 2002
We have some good stuff going on right now!
In just a few days (around July 28th) we will be going to Mary Bridge Children’s hospital to present the Thunderbird convertible, and the big check
And I do mean “Big” …I actually had the large cardboard make believe check shipped out to me! How funny is that?

Than around the 1st weekend in August we are going to have little Frankie’s Memorial, for everyone out here in Washington that still needs to say Good-bye. The Mayor has said OK to our idea of dedicating a tree to him at our local Park. We are so happy about this. We hope it will be a beautiful day, and we can all gather around Frankie’s tree, and enjoy memories of him.

I had big Frank break out the old scanner I brought him 3 Christmas’s ago, so I can put pictures of both these events on the website.
It will be nice to have some new pictures to look at.

Take care, and enjoy the summer.

It was vey exciting to meet Sarah Ferguson, and the staff at WPLJ.
We told them at the radio station that their listeners were amazing. I wrote a quick note telling about some of the beautiful responses we recieved, and asked if they would dedicate the song “Thank you” to everyone. I am on the road back to WA, so I don’t know if they have gotten around to this yet. If not, I will post the note on the webpage so everyone can enjoy the kindness we encountered.
You all should feel real good about yourselves. And a special thanks to Warnock Ford for adding an EXTRA $5000 to the hospital’s total !
Some things are NOT too good to be true. We couldn’t ask for a happier ending.

Horay, you checked!

Here is some other information I have. There is no way you can learn about this problem, and not want to help. So I will thank you in advance for rolling up your sleeve, and doing your part!

-Every 2.5 seconds some one needs a blood transfusion. Without the ready supply of life-giving blood, nearly 4 million people a year will die.

-On an average, 1 in 3 people will need a blood transfusion at least once in their life.
“If we stop, and think about it, we all know someone whose life was saved because of a transfusion” said Dr. Tood

-One reason for the shortage is that the general population is getting older.According to a study, the elderly will soon outnumber the young for the 1st time world wide. An older population tends to donate less, but require more transfuions.

-A blood donation is quick, and painless. SADLY, less than 5% of the population donates blood.

Please find some time to stop by Community Blood services
located at 970 Linwood Ave West
Paramus, NJ

Have a heart, save a life.

Just say that to yourself once. It’s enough to give you chills!
He was just a tiny little baby. Too weak to ever learn how to walk, not old enough to talk, too sick to leave his hospital room, but yet Baby Frankie made his way into thousands of hearts.
We are so honored to be able to give this gift in Frankie’s name to the children’s hospital. They absolutley deserve it, and I’ve heard some of the wonderful ideas they have for how they will use it. I can’t wait to share them in my diary entry, but first I need to respond to all the kind emails we recieved. The diary will be updated in a day or 2 I promise.
Here is the Hospital’s address so many of you have asked for. I am over joyed that you want to make your own donations. Just when you are ready to give up something spectacular like this happens…

Great News,
The WPLJ contest goes until Tuesday!
I’m trying to get Elmo to call in from Sesame Street. Baby Frankie was a huge fan, and I think Jim Henson had his own Charity for kids if I remember right.

To update the celebrity list, here’s the recent star’s who have called in:

John Lithgow
Tiki Barber

So have you guys heard about the contest WPLJ radio is having? I think it ends on Friday.
What they are doing is having listeners get celebrities to call in on their behalf. The listener who gets the biggest Star to call the radio station gets a brand new car, and the star gets $10,000 for the charity of their choice.
Sounded like a good deal to me, but their was only 2 problems:
1. We would have to sell the car to pay medical bills

2. We don’t know any celebrities!!!

But then I realized…We could get the Star to donate the 10 Grand to the Leukemia society, or the Bone Marrow foundation, and we could donate the new car as well ! A double benefit for the kids fighting cancer out there.
So if anyone knows a Celebrity willing to call in on little Frankie’s behalf- we will donate the new car.
I know it’s a long shot, but anything to help the cause.
So far this is who called in:
Cher
Paula Abdul
NJ Govenor
Foghat
Joey Soprano
Jenifer Connoly(for her cousin…no fair!)
John MacEnroe

News Flash:
Dylan got the game ball! He is beside himself with excitment. After the game the coach gave a short speech about Dylan giving a 100% all the time, playing with all heart, and always being a team player than handed him the game ball.
I don’t need to say how proud we are of him.
But I will tell you he is still sleeping with the ball under his pillow! (that can’t be comfy?)

Hey, we got our first international card today. All the way from Germany!
I need to talk about a very wonderful organization. They are called ” Chemo Angels” .
I first heard about them from another parent at Mary Bridge Children’s hospital. She was telling me how thoughtful her son’s chemo angel was at christmas. Shortly after I signed Frankie up.
They are all volunteers, and if you are going through chemotherapy– you can get an angel. They send cards, and keep track of your progress, remember your birthday, and much more. Frankie’s chemo angel was very sweet, and when he passed we were sent well wishes, and prayers from angels all over the US. They really have big hearts, and as soon as I’m back on my feet I can’t wait to join up to become one.
Going through chemotherapy is such a nightmare, anything I can do to bring a smile to someone going through that hell will be a joy.
So, for the record Chemo Angels : I think you guys are wonderful! Keep doing a great job, and I’ll be there to help pass on the kindness shortly.

Some thing Very wonderful is happening in Tacoma today.
The American Cancer Society is having it’s annual RELAY FOR LIFE.
This event was started in 1985 by Dr. Gordon Klatt who ran for 24hrs. to raise money for childhood cancer research. That year he raised $27,000 !
This event is more than a fund raiser, it reaches into the community and brings neighbors, bussiness, and families together to celebrate those who have survived cancer, and to remember those who have not.
This year there will be a survivor’s lap for every kid that made it!!! Hip-Hip-Horray!
And there will be a candle light memorial for the little ones in heaven.
Some of the nurse’s and doctor’s from Mary Bridge will be wearing pins, hats, and shirts with Frankie’s picture on them. We are so honored.
So if you’re in Tacoma- get your butt out there, and start walking for these kids! If you live in another state find out when and where the nearest relay for life is . You can contact the American Cancer Society. And guess what, if there isn’t one near you….START ONE !

Go Jodi, Go Mary, Go Cheryl, Go Doc T, Doc N, Go Heather, Go Nick, Go Zack, Go Gabe…
WE LOVE YOU!

I would like to hire a researcher for a small project. Can anyone out there get me information about that? thanks.

Also I have a question I would appreciate some feedback on:
I have been getting Alot of emails from people who didn’t know about little Frankie’s funeral until it was already over. Alot of WPLJ listeners, and people who saw Frankie on the news, came to the blood drives, or read about him in the paper have really followed his story. These people still need to say good bye in a way. They have all expresseed this, and the #1 request is that we have some kind of fund raiser in the near futher.
Is this a good idea?
I know many families have fundraisers even up into years after their loss. Medical bills are just plain ridiculous, but more importantly they tell me it helps to keep the reason, their loved one fought so hard ,alive, as well as envoking awareness for a great cause. The reason I liked best was that after doing sucessful fundraisers for a while they were eventually able to have money in their fund to offer other families who find them self in the beginning of a terrifing battle with cancer. Nothing would make me feel prouder than knowing Frankie’s fund helped the family of another precious child .
BUT–I am not in a state of mind to make good decisions right now! this I do know.
So please let me know your feelings on this .
Thanks.

To everyone who attended Frankie’s funeral last Thursday,
Thank you. The ceramony was beautiful, and powerful just like his life. It was healing to be surrounded by people who loved our baby.
We will be having a memorial service for Frankie when we get back to Washington. (Late June?)
There are alot of people who loved Frankie very much out there, and we will make sure everyone has a chance to say good bye. It is not going to be a somber occasion, we plan on celebrating his life.
He was a shooting star.

Hello All,
Just a quick update on the “Fire House Fued”
I have the Loser’s photo in my possesion! We are in the process of posting on the website. Be prepared-it ain’t pretty, folks…
I really have to hand it to Mr. Quinton, and all the NJ Firefighters for being such good sports. I was really impressed. I also got a ton of emails protesting the decision! (of course all from the East coast) You know they did have more blood donated, which means are higher combined total…
It kind of makes you think…
Maybe Mr. Hodges (Washington Fire Fighters) should also rise to the challenge? If it is really being questioned, there is no reason he shouldn’t have to take a picture holding up a sign with nothing else, but a silly hat and socks, right? Tom Quinton did it…..
Let me know what you think. And Mr. Hodges, you may be hearing from me very soon…

It’s been awhile since I have updated the news.
We are still trying to put together the Elvis benefit, it looks like it is going to shape up to be a really fun night.
We already have NY Yankee, and NJ Devil’s tickets to raffle off, plus other cool prizes, and possibly a SURPISE guest!
Dylan (Big Brother) has his very first baseball game this Wednesday, and we are all excited.

As for the Fire House Fued, I am still waiting on the Loser’s photo!
Boy, I’ll tell ya if I was a Puyallup Fire Fighter, and I won, and had all these bragging rights I sure wouldn’t put up with this delay…I would want the losers picture posted right away!
Not that I’m trying to start a comosion or anything….(hee-Hee)
- -, 1:11 PM
Thursday, March 28, 2002
Wow, talk about a close race. I felt like I was in Florida—count, and re-count!
Only 3 pts. seperated the winner from the loser! Here are the numbers:

Washington (Hodges): 375 Marrow and 148 pints of blood.

New Jersey(Quinton): 372 Marrow and 152 pints of blood.

CONGRATS TO DON HODGES AND THE PUYALLUP, WA FIRE DEPT.

And to Tom Quinton : Get your sign ready, and we’ll be looking foward to the photo.

All this betting was alot of fun, but on a serious note we all know there really were NO losers! These fire fighters put 747 new people on the National Bone Marrow Registry. I can not tell you how important that is . 70% of all patients waiting for a transplant NEVER find a suitable match. These guys just gave 747 more chances at life! 747 more chances to blow out birthday candles, 747 more chances to grow up, and fall in love, 747 more chances to live long enough to say THANK YOU.
Great Job Guys.

TIME’S UP!
We have waited long enough. I gave Mr. Quinton, and Mr. Hodges more than enough chances to come up with an acceptable wager, so now I will lay down the rules:
The Loser (Marrow Drive with the lesser # of donors)–
Will have to wear a sign that reads ” WE LOST” with nothing else on except a funny hat, shoes and socks!
Yes, the sign can be as LARGE as the Loser wants. Come on people, this is a family site!

There will be a photo taken of this specticale, and I will post it on this site for the whole world to see!
The WINNER:
Gets bragging rights.

The results of the “Fire House Fued” will be posted in the morning.

Lets hear it for Cousin Matt, and Uncle Kevin doing a great job on the website!
THANKS GUYS.
Hello, has anyone seen Mr. Quinton or Mr. Hodges? I think they skipped town….They were suppose to get back to me with the bet for the “Fire House Fued”
If they don’t hurry up, I’m gonna have to rent 2 chicken costumes, which could be dangerous if they get called to a fire. All those feathers have to be real flamable, no?

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!
4 years ago today I meet Big Frank(Dad). How lucky can one girl be?
Anyway, we made the best out of the baby’s birthday yesterday, friends, family, and kind emails from strangers made it special.
But what really blew us away was the huge parade they threw for him in NY! I mean , I know alot of folks are pulling for him, but I have no idea how all those Irish people knew it was the baby’s birthday!!!!

That’s it. We have waited long enough. This is for Mr. Quinton, and Mr. Hodges concerning the “Fire House Fued”: Either you 2 come up with the stakes in 72hrs. or I will. And you don’t want that! I have visions of the losing Firehouse dressed in pink Tu-tu’s. You know I’d have to post that picture on the website! Anyway, incase you think I’m bluffing just ask someone from the postoffice how I bet! So let us know by Tuesday 3/19

Now here is some Bone Marrow Transplant(BMT) Trivia:

Did you know….

–That 70% of those in need of a BMT never get one because a suitable donor was not found.

–Chances of finding a match range from 1 in 1,000 to 1 in several million.

–AML Leukemia patients not able to achieve remission have a survival rate of 0-5% without a BMT.

–The chances of finding a family memeber mis-match for 1 HLA antigen(5 out of 6) is only 3 to 5%.

–Donor registries exists in more than 30 countries, with over 750,000 donors on file.

–Currently 70 Hospitals in the US preform BMT’s.

–Definition of Marrow Donor: HERO

We need volunteers for the planning commitee mail Joyd@blackmillwork.com
I’ll give ya 3 hints:
1) He’s not dead

2)His dog ain’t a collie

3)And his shoes are the color of Frankie’s eyes
- -, 10:20 PM

Very Important:
To all the donors–a big, giant THANK YOU. You guys rock. Every single one of you is a hero. You all came out to save a life. When I was at the drive, every time someone walked in the door I saw another chance for Frankie to live. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

If it was up to me, I say they should put their money where their mouth is! You all remember the Major’s Bet when the Mariner’s played the Yanks, right? Exactly what I’m talking about.
So Tom? Don? What do ya say? What are the stakes? I need to know before I print the results……

OKAY HERE WE GO:
In January the Puyallup, WA Fire Fighters held a bone marrow drive for Frankie, and over 300 people turned out. Don and Debbie Hodges headed up the event, and really pulled to community together.
A month later, Tom Quinton, and Barney Dunn from the Leonia/Edgewater Fire Dept. did the same with a similar amazing turn out.
Rodney Williams(NY Giants) made a guest appearance, and proved to be a great guy!
How about these Fire Fighters, Folks? Even when they are not running into burning buildings, they are still saving lives. Lets hear it for them!!!!!!!
